Hyde studied at art schools in San Francisco and New York before traveling to Europe in 1890. In Paris, she studied under Raphaël Collin and Félix Régamey, awakening an interest in Japonism. In 1899, at the age of 31, she made her first trip to Japan, initially planning a brief visit but ultimately staying for 13 years. In Japan, she studied multi-color woodblock printing under Emil Orlik, etching under Bernard Leach, and Japanese-style painting under Kano Tomonobu. Hyde also developed a keen interest in ukiyo-e, making drawings and entrusting the carving and printing to skilled artisans. Her work won an award at the 10th Nihon Kaiga Kyokai (Japan Painting Association) Exhibition. Meanwhile, her woodblock print Baby Talk won a gold medal at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle. Hyde’s woodcuts enchantingly reflect her admiration for Japanese culture and customs, often focusing on themes of women and motherhood. (A.J.)
