Asai Chu was born in Edo into a samurai household, his father having been a retainer of the Sakura domain, and spent his early years in Sakura. He went on to be pioneer of modern Japanese Western-style painting, with ties to Chiba Prefecture. Over the years we have continued to acquire and study his works, which are a cornerstone of our collection.
This painting, produced around 1887 based on experiences during a visit to Gunma Prefecture, is a prime example of his early work. It prominently features a large straw-thatched farmhouse in the center, with two figures in the front garden effectively tying together the overall composition. Subdued bluish-gray tones are accented by yellow and white winter chrysanthemums blooming on the fence. This landscape deftly captures the atmosphere of rural daily life and the mood of the season, amply conveying Asai’s technical mastery. (J.A.)
