On the Indian Ocean
1910
Watercolor on paper
38.0× 28.0cm
In December 1910, Ishii Hakutei embarked on travels around Europe lasting approximately two years. During a stopover in Singapore on the way, he captured the likeness of an Indian youth who boarded the ship. This painting is remarkable for its keen portrayal of the young man’s well-defined lips and vivid eyes. The simplicity of the subject’s clean white attire, devoid of any unnecessary detail, dramatically contrasts with his richly colored skin and expressive face. The backdrop of clouds and the deep blue sea conveys the feel of the Indian Ocean breeze. An example of Hakutei’s extraordinary command of portraiture, the painting leaves a powerful impression.
The artist, a student of Asai Chu, left a significant mark not only on oil painting and printmaking but also on the art scene, contributing to publication of art magazines and formation of art associations where he held key positions. (N.R.)
